709 area: Newfoundland and Labrador

INTRODUCTION OF LOCAL 10-DIGIT DIALING AND A NEW AREA CODE IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR DEFERRED AS PER THE CRTC DECISION ON FEBRUARY 14, 2018.

NUMBERS WITH THE 709 AREA CODE CONTINUE TO BE AVAILABLE AND NO CHANGES IN DIALING ARE REQUIRED AT THIS TIME.
The new implementation dates will be communicated later.

10-digit dialing becomes mandatory

Starting August 17, 2018, business and residential consumers in the 709 region will have to adopt 10-digit dialing – the area code followed by the phone number – for all local communications. This dialing method has been successfully implemented in several regions in Canada.

The introduction of 10-digit dialing is the result of a decision by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) and will pave the way for the addition of a new area code, 879, starting on November 24, 2018, as the 709 area code reaches capacity.

For your local calls, you will always enter 10 digits (area code + local number)

  • from 709 to 709
  • from 709 to 879
  • from 879 to 879

The 9-1-1 emergency number remains a three-digit number.

Anyone who already has a number with area code 709 will keep the same number.
